Since the release of the National Medium - and Long Term Plan for the Hydrogen Energy Industry in March last year, the development of China's hydrogen energy industry has pressed the fast forward button, and the landing of hydrogen energy pilot demonstration projects has accelerated. Significant results have been achieved in accelerating industrial layout in various regions. This is the information released at the 2023 China Hydrogen Industry Conference held in Foshan, Guangdong on November 7th.

Ren Zhongbao, Deputy Director of the High tech Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, stated that the National Development and Reform Commission, together with relevant departments, actively promotes the development of the hydrogen energy industry and has achieved positive results. On the supply side, there are 92 renewable energy projects under construction and completed nationwide, with an annual production capacity exceeding 700000 tons. At the transportation end, more than 380 hydrogen refueling stations have been built, covering 29 provinces. New models such as integrated hydrogen production and refueling stations and comprehensive oil, electricity, and hydrogen stations have begun to be demonstrated. On the application side, more than 15000 fuel cell vehicles have been promoted in China, and new types of transportation vehicles such as hydrogen powered locomotives, ships, and airplanes are gradually being piloted. New scenarios, models, and formats such as hydrogen electricity integrated renewable energy supply stations and green hydrogen chemical industries are rapidly emerging.

The overall development trend of China's hydrogen energy industry is good, with steady improvement in technology at all stages of production, storage, transportation, and use. In terms of hydrogen energy preparation, as of the end of September, China has planned and constructed more than 400 renewable energy hydrogen production projects, with a total production capacity of over 900000 tons per year for 120 ongoing projects. In terms of hydrogen refueling, the cumulative number of hydrogen refueling stations built ranks first in the world. In terms of diversified applications, China has become the world's largest market for the production and application of fuel cell commercial vehicles. "Bian Guangqi, Deputy Director of the Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration, emphasized that in the future, the National Energy Administration will strengthen top-level design, promote key technology and equipment research and development, explore multi scenario efficient utilization, establish and improve a standardized system, and actively promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry.

The meeting revealed that by 2025, the planned green hydrogen production capacity in the northwest region will reach 700000 tons, and the planned green hydrogen production capacity in 10 provinces will reach 1.04 million tons. In August of this year, Sinopec's 20000 tons/year green hydrogen demonstration project in Kuche, Xinjiang was fully completed and put into operation, marking a breakthrough in the scale and industrial application of green hydrogen in China.

Jing Chunmei, Director of the Research and Information Department and Researcher at the China International Economic Exchange Center, stated that although green hydrogen has accelerated its development in China, its proportion in the total hydrogen energy worldwide is currently less than 1%. According to IEA predictions, by 2050, the proportion of green hydrogen will reach 85%, indicating a huge demand and broad prospects. Along the "the Belt and Road", 85% of the world's countries that have released hydrogen energy strategies are gathered, which is an important basis for China's foreign cooperation in hydrogen energy. In the future, we should continue to improve the top-level design of hydrogen energy, strengthen core technology research and development, and reduce storage and transportation shortcomings; We need to strengthen international cooperation, participate in the formulation of international standards, and enable more countries to share the achievements of hydrogen energy innovation and application.

Zhang Xiaoqiang, Executive Vice Chairman and Director of the Executive Bureau of the China International Economic Exchange Center, stated that China's current hydrogen production is about 34 million tons, accounting for one-third of the world's total production, but more than 30 million tons of it are grey hydrogen. If gray hydrogen to green hydrogen can be achieved, it will provide a huge scenario for the entire green hydrogen application. To promote the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry, we should adhere to the green and low-carbon direction; We also need to attach great importance to the effective utilization of green electricity and green hydrogen, and play their role in the construction of new energy systems and ensuring the stable operation of the power system. At the same time, efforts should be made to increase the research and development of key core technologies, actively expand the large-scale application of green hydrogen in the industrial field, accelerate the reduction of green hydrogen costs, and promote the conversion of grey hydrogen to green in industries such as petrochemicals and chemical engineering. The government should effectively optimize the institutional environment for the development of the hydrogen energy industry.
